The New Year is upon us and it is a great time to inventory your business marketing. What worked in 2012? What didn’t work? Below are some tips for better marketing in the upcoming year.

Get it together: if you’re like most business people, you have an email list of clients. But glance around your office. Do you also have business cards, brochures and other contact information scattered about? Take a moment to compile all your contact information. Create a vendor list and a client list. Having everything in one location will save valuable time in the coming months.

Make it lean and mean: now is the time to trim the fat off outdated material. Look closely at all marketing materials. If the content is not current, toss it away. The last thing you want your clients to do is point out flaws in your marketing materials message.

Be ahead of the curve: learn something new. In this digital age of lightening transformations, it is imperative that your business image stays fresh. Try new tactics in reaching customers. If you already utilize a newsletter, progress by incorporating video or social media share tools.

Take it easy: planning and execution is the number one way to remove stress from marketing. If one doesn’t already exist, create a marketing plan for the upcoming year. Make the plan, keep the plan in action and update it often.

Face first: the key to marketing success is building relationships with potential clients. Make sure you, or a business representative, are visible to the public. Attend public functions and be an active member of your local chamber or other business organization. And remember: relationship building is a marathon, not a sprint.

Never stop “scouting”: always be prepared to market your business by having materials on hand such as a small brochure and business card. You never know when the person standing in that long line behind you may be in need of your business.

Study to succeed: in today’s economy, one cannot repeat costly errors over and over. Analyze your business marketing of 2012. Pinpoint which efforts did not pay off as desired or with increased business. Either avoid these marketing errors completely or adjust for improvement.

For many businesses, the avenues of marketing are an open and endless opportunity. Don’t be daunted by the latest digital gizmo. Embrace the possibility of new technology. While keeping a narrow focus on your marketing goals, be open to the endless avenues of succeeding.
