New season, new you: thanks to Addiction Boutique

March 2016: While you’re out looking for your spring attire, be sure to visit Addiction Boutique, because when you discover this store you’ll also discover fashionable clothing at great prices. Addiction Boutique opened last June in Amite Crossing shopping center near Bass Pro (in the same center as VooDoo BBQ and Café Phoenicia).
The name Addiction Boutique acknowledges many women’s “addiction” to clothes. It seems to be on the mark, because so many ladies come in and mention the name and laugh about it fitting them perfectly.

Husband and wife owners Aaron and Melanie Magee agree that an apt description of their style of clothing is “cute, casual and comfortable.”
“When we were starting the business, we were advised to have a style and stick with it, and buy what we like – and that’s what we’re doing, although we’re also paying attention to customers’ feedback,” Aaron said.

Melanie added that when buying for the boutique, she buys clothing and accessories that she, personally, would like to wear and is easy to wear.
She said, “We are looking for quality yet affordable clothes, because we want everyone who comes into our store to find something that is special to them.”
They have lots of dresses to choose from: flowy ones, colorful ones by Flying Tomato, t-shirt dresses, and more.
And of course, there are tops, jeans, leggings and shorts, including popular fringed shorts, and camisoles in about 30 different colors.
Melanie estimates that their Dear John jeans are probably their best-selling item because of the jeans’ comfort and fit. She said, “These jeans are very soft and stretch a little, but they don’t stretch out or sag. And they look great on.”

Accessorize your outfit with just the right belt, purse, scarf and shoes from Addiction Boutique. For footwear, choose flip flops, sandals, booties, heels or wedges in different popular brands such as Volatile, among others. The fringe cross-body purse is popular, and they also offer a variety of clutches, satchel purses, tote bags and beach bags.
Then finish by adding a few nice pieces of jewelry. Much of the jewelry sold at Addiction Boutique is made by local artisans; the couple also buys locally-made clothing and other merchandise when available.

If looking for a gift, consider their jewelry, key chains, headbands and other accessories or any of their clothing items. The Lollia brand of hand crème, eau de parfum, as well as bath and body items, is a line of beautifully designed luxury products which are perfect for gifts or for indulging oneself.
“Merchandise is coming in daily, and the T-shirt dresses and pastel colors are some of the trends for spring and summer,” said Melanie. “Casual clothing with fringe and suede are trends that have been in for a while but they don’t look like they’re going away.

“In the fall, about half of our store is purple and gold merchandise. We’ll have a huge selection of game day clothing.”
The store has clothes from size XS to plus sizes because, according to Melanie, “all women of all sizes want to wear nice-looking clothes.”
Their style of clothes has wide appeal, and for that reason, their clientele ranges from age 18 to 80.
Melanie added, “But, of course, our 14 year old daughter acts like the store is her closet, and both of our mothers have and wear our clothes.”
Although most of their clothes are more on the casual side, they plan to add formals next year.boutique4
They have a line of men’s clothing as well, including jeans, shorts, shirts, t-shirts and accessories.
Addiction Boutique is the first storefront business for husband and wife owners Aaron and Melanie Magee, but it’s not their first foray into retail. They started looking for property over a year ago but nothing worked out, so in 2014, they developed an online store and also started doing trunk shows in a few different places in Baton Rouge.

“Then last summer we found this place – the right place,” explained Aaron. “We had always planned to have a bricks-and-mortar location; it just took a little longer than we expected, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The trunk shows helped us learn about retail business, the buying process and about going to market, plus we developed a following.”

The business has truly become a family affair. Melanie and Aaron Melanie have six children (ages 3, 4, 8, 9, 13 and 14). Melanie had been a nurse for 14 years, and it was impossible for her to be able to take off from work when she needed to for the kids. She has “always been into fashion,” and was at the point in her career when she was ready to look for something else to do.
“Having the store has worked out great. The kids help with things for the store, and we get to be a family – and we’re building this business for us and our children. Plus, my husband and I get to have sort of a mini vacation every three months when we go to market,” Melanie smiled.
The family’s faith is also a huge part of their business. They have a cross as part of their logo, signifying their faith and their belief in running their store in a Christian manner. When Aaron asked his close friend to design a logo for them, his one request was that a cross be incorporated into it.

Melanie and Aaron are partners in running the business, and that extends to working in the store and making decision about buying. Some customers are a little surprised at first to find a man waiting on them, but then they often end up asking for a man’s opinion about a piece of clothing. Melanie says he started paying attention to fashion by buying her clothes for birthdays and anniversaries.
“I like learning and doing something new, and fashion is interesting. And I discovered now much I enjoy meeting people,” Aaron confided. He also enjoyed constructing many of their store displays, creating a very nice ambiance which is a cross between a casual and industrial feel.

Melanie also works in the store, and they are assisted by Arlette Lauber, a sales associate who has been with them since November. They have since hired several other part time workers.
“We try to distinguish ourselves by having superior customer service. We’re friendly to everyone who comes in, and we make a point to always greet them and help them find what they’re looking for – or just allow them to browse if that‘s what they want,” said Aaron.
The business has been working out so well that the Magee family is getting everything ready to open a smaller version of the store in Hammond, inside Salon 51 on Veterans Blvd. near North Oaks Hospital.
They have discovered that they like to do festivals and events, and they will have a booth at the Denham Springs Fair the weekend of April 1-3. Also, they are loaning clothes for the Jean Leigh Academy of Dance fashion show April 2, 6:30 p.m. at Denham Springs North Park.
