Central Perk Coffee Shop & Café

Central area residents were understandably thrilled when Central Perk Coffee Shop & Café – Central’s only coffee shop – reopened in mid-October after the business flooded in August. Just as excited were the coffee shop’s owners Chris and Brockwell Bone.

Brockwell revealed that following the flood, he and wife Chris “reviewed every option available.”

centralperkWhen facing a disaster like that, you first have to get over the shock and then you try to figure out a direction,” he said. “Were we going to reopen? Here or somewhere else? But in the end, it was not a hard decision. This is really my wife’s business, and it’s her passion, and the people of Central have been good to us. So we got busy clearing out, cleaning up and rebuilding. The shop took about one foot of water, so we were better off than many people, but, still, one foot of flood water destroyed the floor, furniture and the lower part of the walls.

They also lost all of their products and an oven, a refrigerator and two freezers along with the contents. Once the cleanup and rebuilding started, they got help from family and friends, and even customers stopped by to offer assistance.

“Come play with us! Come by, grab a hot coffee and play a game. We just bought chess/checkers/tic-tac-toe for you to play at Perk. If you like another particular game, please suggest it in the comments on our Facebook page.” – owner Chris Bone
They inquired about help from FEMA but were told there was no assistance for businesses. They applied to the SBA and went through about four rounds of that process before deciding they didn’t want to go that route. They did quality for and received $7,500 from BRAC and the LA rebirth fund for businesses.

Central Perk Coffee Shop & Café reopened with a bright new décor to welcome back their regular patrons but kept basically the same menu. Their best-selling food items have always been, and still are, their club sandwich and their shrimp and corn soup. The chicken Caesar wrap is also a lunch favorite as are Chris’ big homemade cookies. Biscuits and pastries are popular for breakfast. Central Perk Coffee Shop and Cafe offers also espresso drinks, teas, and coffee as well as a variety of soups, salads, and sandwiches.

Facebook comments from customers include: “I Love Central Perk! I have been meeting here every Tuesday morning with a conversation group from my church; we enjoy good fellowship and good coffee in a great atmosphere!” and, “We love Central Perk! From the live music, to the quiet atmosphere for reading, or meeting a friend for coffee, to the HUGE breakfast sandwiches.”

“Were we going to reopen? Here or somewhere else? But in the end, it was not a hard decision. This is really my wife’s business, and it’s her passion, and the people of Central have been good to us.” Brockwell Bone

Chris thanks all their customers for their loyalty and the Central community for their support.

Brockwell says the shop has seen steady business and growth as people realize they’re back.

We’ve been trying to get the word out through Facebook and Instagram and participating in community events such as the Central Chamber of Commerce Expo, the Halloween Hullabaloo, and the Chamber pancake breakfast,” he said.

Chris owns the business, and Brockwell says she is in the coffee shop every day “making it all happen.” He handles the marketing, is the night crew manager, trains team members and covers shifts when needed.
