GoodHealth Classes and Programs at Lane Regional Medical Center
AARP Smart Driver Course: This 4-hour, classroom refresher course for drivers age 50 and older will help you learn the effects of aging on driving and how to adjust and remain safe on today’s roads. Most auto insurance companies provide a multiyear discount to course graduates. Class size limited. Registration required. Jan 26.
Food Addicts Anonymous: a weekly support group providing fellowship for men and women willing to recover from the disease of food addiction. Meets every Thur in the West Wing Conference Room. Registration not required. Feb 2, 9, 16 & 23 @ 5:30 pm.
Heart Health Fair: The Heart Health Fair hosted by Cardiovascular Institute of the South and Lane Regional Medical Center will feature FREE screenings for cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, smoking cessation education, CPR education and medical professional consultations. Feb 9.
Pregnancy Workshop & Baby Care Basics: The Pregnancy Workshop is an overview of what to expect during pregnancy and delivery for the soon-to-be mom. Baby Care Basics covers everything new moms, dads and grandparents need to know to care for newborns in the first weeks of life. A tour of Baby Lane (the Labor & Delivery unit), is included. Partners are encouraged to attend; child care is NOT provided.

Lane Regional Medical Center staff elects 2017 officers: Joining Dr. Trahan as Medical Staff Officers for 2017 are Adam Whatley, M.D., Vice Chief of Staff; Nikki Gautreaux, M.D., Secretary/Treasurer; and Michael Romaguera, M.D., Medical Staff Representative to the Board.
Dr. Trahan, Medical Director of Lane Wound Care and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center, has been a member of Lane Regional’s medical staff since 1988. Dr. Whatley, Orthopaedic Surgeon at Baton Rouge Orthopaedic Clinic, has been a member of Lane Regional’s medical staff since 2010. Dr. Gautreaux, OB/GYN at Bayou Regional Women’s Clinic, has been a member of Lane Regional’s medical staff since 2013. Dr. Romaguera, Emergency Medicine and Hospital Medicine at Lane, has been a member of Lane Regional’s medical staff since 1987.

Children’s Art Classes at Live Oak Elementary: Instructor Kerry Curtin is hosting his Spring drawing and painting classes in three sessions for grades 2-6 at South Live Oak Elementary School in Room 602 (drive to the back of the school). The classes will be Tuesdays, 6-7:30 p.m.; each session is four classes and there are 3 sessions.. The classes are sponsored by the Arts Council of Livingston Parish. LIGO Science Saturday: The LIGO – Livingston Science Education Center Free Science Saturday Free Science Saturday is held every third Saturday of the month from 1-5 p.m. Visitors can tour the control room, explore the exhibit hall, try hands-on demos of scientific principles, ask questions, watch videos and more. VFW Patriotic Contests for students: VFW Post 7017 of Denham Springs and the VFW Auxiliary 7017 is sponsoring several patriotic contests in Livingston Parish. Patriotic Art is for grades 9-12, and students are to paint a patriotic picture. For more information, visit www.auxvfw.org. Deadline is March 3, 2017.
VFW Travelers schedule trips: The VFW Travelers are planning a trip to Silver Slipper Casino on March 14. The cost is $34 per person, and this price includes bus transportation, tip to driver, $20 free play and half-off buffet. Ya Yas Mardi Gras Outreach: The Ya Yas community service line-dance group has a busy schedule for Mardi Gras 2017. Tickfaw State Park to reopen Jan. 30: The campground, RV and tents of Tickfaw State Park at Springfield will re-open January 30. Reservations can be made now by either calling Reserve America at 1-877-226-7652, or log onto the website www.reserveamerica.com. No date yet for when the cabins or group camp will re-open.
VFW Aux Membership Changes: Women who have joined the military and have fought beside the men in the wars to help bring freedom to our country are eligible to join the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization. The women and men veterans give VFW Auxiliary membership eligibility to their spouses, daughters, sons, grandsons, granddaughters, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, stepchildren and step-grandchildren.
To become a member of the Auxiliary, your sponsor must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National; must have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and received an honorable or general discharge or be currently serving; and must have served in a war on foreign soil or hostile waters. The DD-214 form will have this information. If the form cannot be found, we have a number to call to get the information.
Our main purpose is to help, serve and honor our veterans. We send care boxes overseas, take food and gifts to the VFW Home in Jackson and fruit baskets to the veterans in nursing homes. We also collect and donate needed items and clothes for homeless veterans. We meet the first Friday of the month at 2 p.m. at the Post Home, 113 Centerville St., Denham Springs.
