Children’s art classes offered
Instructor Kerry Curtin is hosting his Spring drawing and painting classes in three sessions for grades 2-6 at South Live Oak Elementary School in Room 602 on Tuesdays, 6-7:30 p.m. Each session has four classes. Fee is $45 per session for non-members ($40 for ACLP members). Session 2: March 7, 14, 21, 28. Session 3: April 4, 11, 25, May 2. ACLP sketchbook workshop
The Arts Council of Livingston Parish will host a sketchbook workshop for adults to introduce or develop the use of a sketchbook in their lives. Sketchbooks for the artist or hobbyist are valued for their contribution to a person’s creative life. Many are bound and meant to be keepsakes as they contain sketches, bits of personal history, observations, journaling, visual diary, and studies. This 2 1/2 hour class will include exercises that touch on many areas of thought. Requirements: bring your own bound sketchbook. Fee: $25 for members / $30 for nonmembers of ACLP. North Oaks Physician Group opens primary care clinic in Walker
North Oaks Physician Group has opened a primary care clinic in Walker. North Oaks seeks junior volunteers for summer 2017
North Oaks Health System is accepting applications for the 2017 Junior Volunteer summer program now through May 5. Applicants must be between the ages of 14 and 17, attend a mandatory orientation June 6, and commit to a minimum of eight service hours per week during the eight-week program that runs from June 12-Aug. 4.
The North Oaks Junior Volunteer program offers a unique opportunity for community service and career exploration. Potential junior volunteers should be dependable, prompt, honest and professional. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: answering phones and patient call lights; transporting patients and equipment; delivering flowers; stocking supplies; performing various clerical duties; working in the Gift Shop; and assisting in various other departments. A Door of Hope banquet
A Door of Hope Ministries will have their annual fundraising banquet, “The Power of Hope Event,” March 25, at 6 p.m. at North Park Recreation Center in Denham Springs. The event is free, but seating is limited. The organization has purchased a building to help with its mission to help girls and women break the cycle of life-controlling issues and self-destructive behaviors such as abuse, addiction, unplanned pregnancies, eating disorders, depression, and self-harm. They provide free services such as counseling, clothing, and food. With the purchase of the new building, they will also be able to provide baby formula, diapers, free pregnancy testing and free ultrasounds, and, in the future, they hope to be able to house women on site.

H.O.P.E. grief support groups at Ochsner
The Hospice of Baton Rouge will host free H.O.P.E. Grief Support Groups, a six-week program that provides a safe place for sharing and growth through grief with group facilitator Christine Brasseaux, LMSW, THBR Social Worker. LIGO Science Saturday
At the LIGO – Livingston Science Education Center Free Science Saturday, visitors can tour the control room, explore the exhibit hall, try hands-on demos of scientific principles, ask questions, watch videos and more. Private water well training
If your family gets drinking water from a private water well, visit the Main Library on March 2 from 5-7 p.m. for a free Private Water Well Owners class. Learn the proper techniques to chlorinate your well, how to collect water samples, water treatment alternatives and free resources available to private well owners. This service is provided by Rural Community Assistance Partnership, LSU School of Public Health, Virginia Tech, and Communities Unlimited. REGION – Baton Rouge Zoo photo contest is underway
Get your cameras ready! The Zoo’s annual photo contest is open now through March 20.
Categories: Children 12 and younger (note: parent or guardian must register and submit photo for this category); Junior, ages 13 up to 18; Novice adult, beginners and nonprofessionals; Advanced Adult, considerable experience to professional; Fun Foto, pictures of you, your family and/or friends having fun at the Zoo. The photo must be identifiable as being taken at Baton Rouge Zoo. All photos must be uploaded by March 20. Only photos taken at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo within the past year (March 28, 2016 – March 19, 2017) are eligible. A photo can only be entered in a single category. All zoo and aquarium subject matter is eligible, but judges will give preference to photos of animals currently on exhibit. A judging panel will select all winners EXCEPT for fan favorite. The contest is sponsored by The Advocate. Be sure to upload your favorite Zoo photos to The Advocate’s website by March 20th. A first, second and third place winner will be selected within each of the categories. The judges will also select a grand prize winner from all entries. Zippity Zoo Fest coming in April
Help BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo celebrate its 47 years in Baton Rouge at the Zoo’s annual spring festival and birthday celebration April 1 & 2, 9:30am-5pm. Grounds close at 6 pm.
This year’s festivities will include a Children’s Village with giant inflatables; an entertainment stage and seating area under the pavilion; an EdZooCation Station with interactive games about animals; chats with zookeepers;. face painting; the photo contest winners gallery, the AAZK Booth ring toss game for rhinos, and various activity booths.
Admission is adults & teens $8.75; seniors $7.75; children 2-12 $5.75 and children 1 and younger free.

YMCA of the Capital Area celebrates 100 years
The YMCA of the Capital Area will host its 100-Year Celebration March 10, 6:30-9:30pm at the Raising Cane’s River Center. The event will spotlight the achievements of the past 100 years, but really it’s about our future and kicking off another century of serving our community. Event will include dinner, cocktails, history presentation, live music, special Y 100 gift, and testimonial speakers. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Leisure classes at BRCC
Baton Rouge Community College’s Division of Liberal Arts is sponsoring four community noncredit leisure classes this spring in conjunction with Continuing Education/Workforce.
Relief Printmaking: March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Frazier Art Annex room 104, 555 Julia St. Participants will learn fundamental printmaking skills in relief printmaking on professional printmaking equipment. The course is limited to 18 participants and costs $130, including paper, linoleum, ink, tools and access to the studio facility during class times.
Wheel-Thrown Pottery: March 7, 14, 21 and 28 and April 4, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Frazier Art Annex room 112. A skilled ceramist will teach students to throw, glaze and fire functional and imaginative vessels in a studio environment. The course is limited to 18 participants and costs $130, including clay, glazes and on-site firing. Students will be required to buy a pottery tool kit, approximately $20, from an art supply store.
Writing Nights Live: Poetry Workshop: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 21, 23, 28 and 30; Governors Building Room 142, BRCC Mid-City campus. Poets will share original work, discuss the submissions of their peers and learn about the publication process with English professor and published poet Carrie Causey. The course is limited to 15 participants and costs $65.
Screening Nights Live: Film And Discussion: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 7 and 10 a.m. to noon April 8; Cypress Building room 118, BRCC Mid-City campus. Dr. Valerie Holiday will explore “Why ‘Citizen Kane’ is the Greatest Movie of All Time” through a screening of the film, lecture and discussion of the new language of cinema created by Orson Welles. Fee is $50. All courses have free parking for participants.

SU Ag Center to host 7th annual Small Farmer Conference
Baton Rouge, La. – Small farmers from throughout the state will gather at the Southern University Ag Center March 16-18 to attend the 7th annual Louisiana Small Farmer Conference.
The three-day conference, themed “Innovations and Resilience for Louisiana Small Family Farms,” is designed to educate, provide expanded awareness of educational opportunities, USDA programs and services and other resources to help small farmers stay in business.
Registration for the conference is complimentary for anyone who submits their registration form by Friday, March 3. On-site registration will begin at 8 a.m. daily.
Conference speakers will include Jay Grymes, Chief Meteorologist at WAFB News Channel 9; Brandon Davis, Ag Labor Attorney at Phelps Dunbar, LLC.; Leonard Jordan, Associate Chief for Conservation at the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Brennan Washington, Minority Farmer/ Outreach Specialist.
Open house for Girl Scout camp
Girl Scout Camp Open Houses for parents and daughters to learn more about camp opportunities will be held March 26 and April 9 at Girl Scout Camp Whispering Pines in Independence and April 30 at Girl Scout Camp Marydale in St. Francisville. Each open house is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Visitors will be able to tour the resident camps’ living quarters, meet the staff, and ask questions.
Overnight Girl Scout resident camp sessions will be May 28-July 21 at Camps Covington, Marydale and Whispering Pines. Day camp and troop camping sessions are being offered. The resident camp program is accredited by the American Camping Association and is supervised by trained staff. Sessions range from $75-$410. St. Francisville – Library’s annual daffodil sale is in bloom
Friends of the West Feliciana Parish Library’s annual are in the midst of their annual daffodil sale. Fliers for placing orders are available at the library, as well as churches and various businesses around St. Francisville.
A vase of 40 blooms is $25. Larger quantities are available. Orders with payment can be delivered to the library, at 5114 Burnett Road, St. Francisville, or mailed to Friends of the West Feliciana Parish Library, P.O. Box 1962, St. Francisville, LA 70775. Checks should be made out to “Friends of the WFP Library,” and all orders must be received by March 9.

Baker – Proceeds from Baker Buffalo Festival aid Baker School System
Since 1981, the annual Baker Buffalo Festival has raised money for the Baker School System and to increase tourism and interest in the city of Baker. On Feb. 16, Baker Mayor Darnell Waites presented $7,500 to Herman Brister, superintendent of the Baker school system.
Pointe Coupee – Veteran’s Monument brick being sold again
The Pointe Coupee Parish Veteran’s Monument Committee are once again selling memorial bricks for the Pointe Coupee Parish Veteran’s Monument through June 16, 2017. You may visit www.lalegion.org for brick order forms. Click on District/Post News, choose Post 248 from the drop down menu, and click on the printable brick order form. Follow the directions and mail it to the address on the form. Forms can also be picked up at Guaranty Bank drive-through window, 175 New Roads Street, New Roads. Cost is $100 per brick.
