Living the Christian Life

Before we look into the subject of living the Christian life we must understand what life is. According to the Christian faith life is the gift of God granted to all who believe in Jesus Christ for salvation. The gift of God’s kind of life only comes by salvation through Christ. What is salvation?

Salvation is a work of God whereby He provides the way to bring us to life and to himself. Every person in the world has sinned against God and it is sin that separates us from God. However God sent his son, Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty for our sin by suffering on a cross. After Christ died on the cross, he was buried, but three days later he resurrected and now lives to hear the repentant who turn to him for forgiveness and life.

The life that comes through salvation in Christ is God’s kind of life. If you are not saved you do not have God’s life. You should ask Christ to forgive you of your sin and grant you his kind of life. If you are saved you have life in Christ, and you should enjoy it to the max.

So how do you live the Christian life? I count at least five essentials to living the Christian life: faith, obedience, prayer, humility and fellowship.

The Bible informs us that it is not possible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6). Why? Because faith is the very first step into our new life in Christ. The Bible says we are “saved by grace through faith” (Ephesians 2:8-9). After receiving life we must continue daily to exercise faith in God. The faith life introduces us to disciplined obedience.
God has outlined the way for us to display His kind of life. The outline is revealed in His Word (The Holy Bible). We must be obedient to God’s instructions if we are to enjoy His kind of life.

To help us put His instructions into practice God gave us the wonderful gift of prayer. Through prayer we seek His strength and guidance, but in order to do this consistently we must humble ourselves. Humility simply means we abandoned all confidence in our flesh and totally trust God to empower us to by the indwelling Holy Spirit in all our efforts to obey His word. If we live in the Spirit we must also walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:25).

Another great help God granted to aid us in living His kind of life is the fellowship of the family of God (the church). We are part of a body that was designed to function in fellowship. We only manifest partial evidence God’s kind of life as individuals, but the fellowship of the church aids in providing a glorious picture of His life. Jesus said “You are the light of the world . . . Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14a,16). Church – live to shine!
